Abstract :
Staphylococcus aureus on the skin can cause acne vulgaris (acne). Garlic contains allicin and organosulfur which plays an important role as an antibacterial, both gram-positive and gram-negative. The formulation of garlic with a topical dosage form in the form of a gel can facilitate its application to the skin. Optimization of the gel base in the form of HPMC and propylene glycol was carried out to obtain a gel with the best physical properties (pH, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity). Optimization was carried out using Design expert 10 (Trial) software with the simplex lattice design method. Verification of the equations obtained by using a one sample t-test (One sample t-test) with a 95% confidence level on the tested parameters (pH, spreadability, adhesion and viscosity test) was carried out between the prediction formula and the verification formula in the IBM SPSS program Statistics version 23. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the gelling agent component, namely HPMC, has a greater effect on the parameters of viscosity, adhesion, and pH. Meanwhile, the humectant component, namely propylene glycol, played a greater role in the dispersion parameter. Comparison of the composition of the optimum formula of garlic bulb (Allium sativum L) ethanol extract gel, namely HPMC of 5.16% and propylene glycol of 13.84%. The antibacterial activity of the optimum formula of garlic bulb ethanol extract gel (Allium sativum L) against Staphylococcus aureus was obtained intermediate results with an inhibitory response of 15.5 mm.
