Abstract :
The escalation of the debate over the arrival of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia has been going on for a long time and has begun to shift from positive to predominantly negative opinions. News framing in online media can reverse opinions on an issue by raising or changing the actual reality. The purpose of this study was to analyze the construction of the reality of Rohingya refugees through news framing in two medias, a national media (Kompas.com) and an international media (The Guardian). This study used a qualitative approach and a framing analysis model developed by Robert Entman. The purposive sampling method was used to select 20 news items from a total of 254 news items about Rohingya published by both media from December 2023 to May 2024. Data analysis was carried out by grouping the data into four categories, namely Rohingya Ethnic Oppression, Rohingya Refugee Risks, Rohingya Refugee Conditions, and Sentiment towards Rohingya Refugees. The data that had gone through the categorization process was then examined through four stages of Robert Entman's framing analysis model which included; defining the problem, diagnosing the cause, making moral judgments, and providing treatment recommendations. In the final stage, the data was analyzed to see the influence of the ideology of the two media on the framing of Rohingya refugee news in the two media studied. The results of this study indicate that Kompas.com frames news about Rohingya refugees by emphasizing more aspects of humanity, and social justice, and reflecting local values. Meanwhile, The Guardian frames news about Rohingya refugees by providing a broader perspective and considering human rights issues in a global context. The framing used in the media Kompas.com and The Guardian were influenced by their ideologies. These two media not only present news but also play a role in forming a more constructive social narrative towards Rohingya Refugees, especially The Guardian.
