IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING CARTOON AT THE SECOND YEAR OF SDN CANGKOL 03, MOJOLABAN, SUKOHARJO IN 2009/2010 ACADEMIC YEAR (AN ACTION RESEARCH)

Abstract :
This research paper aims, first at describing the implementation of teaching vocabulary mastery by using cartoon at the second year of SDN Cangkol 03, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo, and the second observing the result and the students’ response to it. The researcher takes the students at the second year consisting of twenty-nine students as the subject of the study. The collecting the data the researcher does observation, interview, and tests (pre-test and post-test).The researcher conducts Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of four steps, namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The researcher conducts three cycles. It is found at cycle I that the students still get difficulty to memorize the vocabulary and give low response. To overcome these problems the researcher does re-planning to the next cycles by giving an interesting form of cartoon picture and the games combined in the cartoon picture. In cycles II until the last cycle, the students’ ability to memorize the vocabulary improved. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that generally the vocabulary mastery of students improves from 63.8 to 79.3 (15,5 point). The individual result shows that there are 79.3 % students who increase vocabulary mastery, 4 students or 13.8% who are statically, and 2 students or 6.9% who decrease their vocabulary mastery. Moreover the students are enthusiastic, braver enjoy and to try although they sometimes still make mistakes. Their involvement is also increased. The conclusion is cartoon picture is effective to improve vocabulary mastery to the second year of SDN Cangkol 03 Mojolaban, Sukoharjo
