ABSTRACT In the family life, a husband has a role as a providerof family,otherwise a wife is as the breadwinner. But nowadays is the opposite, namely a wife as a breadwinner of the family is a common thing, as happened in Ujung , Semampir Subdistrict. In family life,it isn?t distinguished the roles of wife and the husband including in fulfilling the family living. Theresearchaims at examining more deeply about the role of wife as the breadwinner of the family formallyat Ujung, Semampir Sub-district, Surabaya City using the social construction theory of Peter L. Berger with the focuses of research: (1) why does the wife act as the breadwinner of the family at Ujung, Semamapir of Surabaya. (2) How is the role of wife of family breadwinner at Ujung of Semampir of Surabaya using social construction theory. The research was a qualitative research by interview method, observation in collecting the data, then analyzed with reduction, it was identifying important data, then presenting data and analyzed with social construction theory, the last verified and given conclusion. The research results indicated that: (1) the role of wife as the family income due to factors of poverty and the experience of working which is owned by the wife of before marriage. (2) the wife of the breadwinner of the social construction theory in ujung of Semampir Subdistrict of Surabaya City is caused bye the first, Externalization or self adaptation with socio-cultural world, that is adjustment toward family economy, Adjustment toward habit of the role wife of family breadwinner and Nash (al-qur'an) understanding Second, objectification is self-interaction with the socio-cultural world. the existence of customs in the community about the role of wife as a breadwinner is done continuously, the awareness of the wife to help the husband in fulfilling the family living, and this has been considered commonplace in society, so this tradition has become a habit. Third, internalization is the self-identification toward the socio-cultural world, this process gives birth the wife of breadwinner at Ujung. The purpose of wife as breadwinner family is to help the economic factors to meet all the needs of the family, then the sociological factor is the desire to raise the social status of the family in the community. ABSTRAK Dalam kehidupan berkeluarga suami memiliki peran sebagai pemberi nafkah keluarga dan istri sebagai penerima nafkah. Namun yang banyak terjadi pada zaman sekarang adalah sebaliknya, seorang istri berperan sebagai pencari nafkah keluarga adalah hal yang lumrah terjadi di masyarakta, seperti yang terjadi pada masyarakat Kelurahan Ujung Kecamatan Semampir.
