ABSTRACT Principal supervision strategy influenced the teachers? motivation and competent in order to improve the teachers? performance. It means that the principal had an essential role in leading the institution (school), especially in managing human resources to maximize the teaching and learning process. Therefore, the principal supervision strategy was truly expected because it gave sufficient contribution in motivating the school teachers and staff. One of the principal?s competencies was as a supervisor. The task was helping the teachers in carrying out the task so that it run according the mutual expectation both in terms of the aspects of the curriculum, aspects of interest, as well as aspects of the vision and mission of the school. The aim of the research were: 1) Understanding the principal?s plan or standard performance as supervisor in assessing the Islamic education teachers? performance at SMAN 1 Ngoro and SMAN 1 Bareng; 2) Understanding the principal strategy as a supervisor in improving the Islamic education teachers? performance at SMAN 1 Ngoro and SMAN 1 Bareng; 3) Understanding the issues which were faced by the principal as a supervisor in improving the Islamic education teachers? performance at SMAN 1 ngoro and SMAN 1 Bareng, and how to overcome the issues. The research approach used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data resources were principal, deputy principal of curriculum, deputy principal of student affair, deputy principal of infrastructure, deputy principal of public affairs, and Islamic education teachers? at SMAN 1 Ngoro and SMAN 1 Bareng, Jombang. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded as follows: (1) The principal?s planning as a supervisor in improving the Islamic education teachers? performance was conducted through evaluation or direct or indirect supervision through the hearth so that it did not intent to offend, as well as through the stage of stimulant and awards, (2) Principal?s strategy in maintaining the discipline, giving the exemplary, having communication room between the teachers and all the aspects of the school and motivation which were building, overcoming the obstacles so the teachers? performance improved, especially Islamic education teachers, (3) Obstacles faced by the principal in improving the teachers? performance can be overcome by conducting guidance and motivation to Islamic education teacher and school residents, human resources development (teacher), andprovisioning the infrastructures. ABSTRAK Strategi supervisi kepala sekolah berpengaruh terhadap kompetensi dan motivasi guru dalam meningkatkan kinerja guru. Artinya, strategi kepala sekolah dalam memimpin lembaga pendidikan (sekolah) khususnya dalam mengelola Sumber Daya Manusia untuk memaksimalkan proses
