Abstract :
ENGLISH : This thesis aims to identify the symbolic meanings of Ruby Red used as Gwyneth?s nickname on Kerstien Giers? novel. Ruby is a figurative symbol that has an extension of meaning according to the context in the novel. The analysing of the meanings of Ruby Red item can be known through data such as words, sentences, conversations, situations, conditions, and activities. In addition, researchers used data sources from the novel, journals and internet. Researchers used the literary criticism to identify and analyse and interpret Ruby Red. The researcher uses only semiotic theory pioneered by Roland Barthes. Semiotic theory has two levels of significance; denotation and connotation. However, the researcher limits the use of the theory to a single signification of connotation (implicit meaning) based on context of the novel. Also, the researcher restricts to analyse the item of ruby red in the first novel edition. The results of the identifying shows that the symbolic meaning of Ruby Red has three extensions of connotative meaning. They are mystery, hero, and tragedy. First, Ruby Red or precious stones as the symbolic meaning of the mystery because Gwen and her family believe in horoscopes and satanic rituals. Second, Ruby Red has a symbol of meaning as a hero because Gwen was figured to travel in the past to take the sample of blood from time traveller who lived in past and had to solve the problem of chronograph is stolen. Last, Ruby has an extension meaning as a tragedy because it has been included in chronicle that all time travellers have symptoms or diseases such as dizzy, nausea, and migraine. Additionally, Ruby's family also believed the satanic ritual and horoscope. Finally, researcher suggest to the next reseacher too more comprehensively analysing this novel. It is because still many other things that can be explored. In addition, researcher suggested to the next researcher to use the other relevant theories to investigate different topic such as psychology, echranisation, symbol by using Charles Sanders Peirce?s theory and so on. INDONESIA : Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi makna simbol Ruby Red yang digunakan sebagai julukan Gwyneth pada novel Ruby Red. Ruby Red merupakan bahasa kiasan yang memiliki perluasan makna sesuai pada konteks yang terdapat pada novel. Analisis makna item Ruby Red ini dapat diketahui melalui data diantaranya kata, kalimat, percakapan, situasi, kondisi, dan kegiatan. Ditambah peneliti menggunakan sumber data novel jurnal dan internet. Peneliti menggunakan metode kritik sastra untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis serta menginterpretasikan Ruby Red. Penulis hanya menggunakan teori semiotik yang dipelopori oleh Roland Barthes. Teori semiotik ini memiliki dua tingkat signifikasi yaitu tingkat denotasi dan konotasi. Namun, peneliti membatasi penggunaan teori pada satu signifikasi yaitu konotasi (makna yang tidak sebenarnya) berdasarkan pada konteks novel. Hasil identifikasi yang berdasarkan pada konteks novel Ruby Red memiliki tiga perluasan makna konotasi yaitu misteri, pahlawan, tragedi. Ruby Red atau batu mulia sebagai makna simbol dari misteri karena Gwen beserta keluarganya percaya pada Horoskop dan ritual setan. Kedua, Ruby Red memiliki simbol makna sebagai pahlawan karena Gwen merupakan sosok penjelajah di masa lalu yang harus memecahkan masalah tentang pencurian kronograf dan dia harus mengambil sample darah orang-orang yang hidup di masa yang lalu. Terakhir, Ruby memiliki perluasan makna sebagai tragedy karena telah terdapat catatan bahwa semua penjelajah waktu itu memiliki gejala symptom atau penyakit seperti pusing, mual, dan migrain. Sedangkan keluarga Rubi percaya pada ritual setan dan horoskop. Terakhir, peneliti menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk lebih komprehensif dalam menganalisa novel ini. Peneliti juga menyarankan kepada peneliti berikutnya untuk menggunakan teeori lain yang relevan untuk menganalisis dengan menggunakan tema yang berbeda seperti psikologi, makna simbol menurut Charles Sanders Peirce?s theory, dan ekranisasi. Hal ini karena masih terdapat banyak hal yang bisa untuk dieksplorasi dari karya sastra Kerstien Giers.

Hal ini karena masih terdapat banyak hal yang bisa untuk dieksplorasi dari karya sastra Kerstien Giers.
