ABSTRACT Being polite in intercultural communication is very important for people because it can show how a person?s right through the way she/he is using the strategy in communication. There will be miscommunication and also misunderstanding which happen in communication between people come from different cultural background. Therefore, learning strategies are considered essential decency. Therefore, politeness strategy is the one of communication strategies used to keep the communicative events among people run well especially with different cultural background in intercultural communication. Accordingly, this research focuses on analyzing politeness strategies used by people with different cultural background in Black or White movie. The researcher as the main instrument has a biggest role in collecting, identifying the data based on the characters in Black or White movie. Moreover, the researcher used Scollon and Scollon?s (2001) politeness strategy framework. This research used qualitative method with case study approach to describe politeness strategies used by the characters with different cultural background in the movie. The results of this research shows that the characters use two strategies of politeness in the movie. Those are, involvement and independence politeness strategies. Involvement politeness strategies are used when they want to show their interest and attention to the hearer in the conversation. The strategies used are noticing or paying attention to hearer, exaggerating, assuming or asserting reciprocity, using names or nicknames, and being voluble or speaking a lot. In addition, independence politeness strategies are used when they want to show their respect towards hearer during the communication. The strategies are making minimal assumptions about hearer?s wants, minimizing threat, apologizing, be pessimistic, stating a general rule, and using family names or titles. The researcher suggests the next researchers to investigate theory of politeness strategy in different forms of object of the study such as communication between foreign and native students in university, or between native and non-native English in guiding tourism. Moreover, the researcher recommends the next researcher to conduct the same topic by using another theory of politeness such as theory from Lakoff and Grice in order to expand knowledge about politeness strategy. ABSTRAK Berperilaku santun dalam komunikasi antar budaya sangat penting bagi orang-orang karena pada saat berlaku santun dapat menunjukkan bagaimana seseorang itu sebenarnnya melalui cara dia menggunakan strategi dalam berkomunikasi. Akan ada miskomunikasi dan juga kesalahpahaman yang terjadi dalam komunikasi antara orang-orang yang berasal dari latar belakang budaya yang berbeda.
