ABSTRACT Reading skill is one of main skills in learning Arabic. The problems of learning in The Language Centre at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang is the textbook is not provided among the students necessities and their abilities level. The researcher saw the importance of reading material development by using communicative approach that is suitable for students necessities and reachs the objectives of basic reading competences. The objectives of this research are: (1) create Arabic book of reading material of intensive class with communicative approach, (2) explain characteristics of Arabic reading material of intensive class with communicative approach for Arabic language students in UIN Imam Bonjol , Padang, (3) measure the effectiveness of the using of reading skill material with communicative approach in improving the reading comprehension of students in UIN Imam Bonjol , Padang. This research uses development research design by Borg and Gall, which consists of 10 steps: problem and potential analysis, collecting information and literature study, product design, design validation, design revision, limited trial, product revision, wide trial, final revision, and final product creation. The data are quantitative and qualitative from experts, lecturers, and students. The data collection is done through questionnaire, observation, interview, test and documentation. The results are: (1) the availability of reading material using communicative approach for Arabic intensive teaching in UIN Imam Bonjol, Padang. (2) this material has more advantages than the previous one because it uses manipulative communicative approach for basic reading for students in UIN Imam Bonjol, Padang. (3) the reading material which is developed by using communicative approach has given significant influence for the improvement in reading skill of students, it can be seen from the reading study result improvement of intensive Arabic students. This research creates finding that good communicative approach used in the intensive teaching to improve basic reading skill is manipulative communicative approach. ABSTRAK Kemampuan membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Arab. Diantara permasalahan pembelajaran di Pusat Bahasa UIN Imam Bonjol Padang adalah belum tersedianya buku ajar yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa. Peneliti melihat pengembangan bahan ajar membaca dengan menggunakan pendekatan komunikatif cocok dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa dan dapat mencapai tujuan kompetensi membaca tingkat dasar. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk: (1) Menghasilkan buku ajar keterampilan membaca dengan pendekatan komunikatif bagi mahasiswa Pusat Bahasa UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, (2) Menggambarkan karakteristik bahan ajar keterampilan membaca dengan pendekatan komunikatif bagi mahasiswa Pusat Bahasa UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, (3) Mengukur efektifitas penggunaan bahan ajar keterampilan membaca dengan pendekatan komunikatif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca mahasiswa Pusat Bahasa UIN Im
