ABSTRACT Nursing students of the Academy of Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan learn the Arabic language, to make the professional staff who are preparing to put them in and out of the country, equipped with skills in Arabic. But the content of educational materials in Academic Nursing of Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan for text books that are used can not to a large extent to make it easier for students to learn Arabic as it is to take learning materials randomly not be appropriate for the needs of the student Academy, then copy them to all students, where the aim is to understanding of the ancient texts only. So as not to develop the four language skills, especially speaking skill. The purposes of this research are: 1) A handbook to improve Arabic speaking skill for students of the Nursing Academy Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan 2) Describe the characteristic of handbook to improve Arabic speaking skill for students of the Nursing Academy Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan, and 3) Test the effectiveness of handbook in improving student?s Arabic speaking skill of Nursing Academy Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan. The methodology of this research is the research and development (R&D). Research instruments to collect data are : 1) Preliminary study by conducting needs assessment, 2) Developing and preparation of Arabic teaching materials based of contextual approach, 3) validation test, languange content experts, designers and instructional media, lecturers of Arabic, and student of Nursing Academy Institute of Health Science Muhammadiyah Pekalongan,and 4) Analysis phase of trial and validation data with percentage formula and t-test. The result of thi research are : (1) The process of preparing this resource is the need analysis, deign and develop, product preparation, product validation, product revision, product trial, and final product. (2) Characteristics of teaching materials that are developed is located in the Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration and Evaluation of teaching materials that are based on the principle of contextual approach, and (3) The experiment appointed that using product handbook could improve the ability of students to speak Arabic. Based on the result of pre-test and post-test that use the handbook was
