ABSTRACT According to Saussure signifier and signified are two elements which are coherently related each other in constructing signs. Signifier is an element of language which is written, listened, or read. Moreover, signified is a concept of a written or sound which able creates a new meaning. Al-Tholaism poem is a poem which is consisted of verses and constructed of certain signs. This poem presents interesting philosophical values, even it has encouraged other poet to create new poems in order to respond it. Thus, al-Tholaism?s poem is worthy to be analyzed using semiotic analysis approach of Saussure which focuses on signifier and signified. In this research the researcher proposes two research questions: the first is about the relationship between signifier and signified, second is figurative meaning of signifier and signified. In collecting data the researcher used library approach. Using heuristics and hermeneutics methods the researcher started to analyze signifier and signified to unveil the new philosophical values. The researcher found the relationship between signifier and signified which will answer the second research problem which is related to it. The researcher found seven signifiers which are arranged by other signified, those are about confusion, sea, monastery, around of grave, palace, hut, thought, and conflict or war. Furthermore, the meaning which is unveiled from the signifiers is in living, a human being needs a right choice to guide themselves to the right values. Then, they also need beautiful values in order to have wonderful life. Not to mention, they also must practice the wisdom values to give a valuable contribution for others.However, in social life a human being needs a role which regulates their life holistically. It demands them to settle a government with a just leader. Moreover, they are expected to balance two dimensions of life, now and hereafter. It is important because using this awareness human being will be able to do their leadership carefully and not authoritatively. Finally the most important value of life philosophy is a human being can contribute much through their ideas to create a better life for others ABSTRAK Menurut Saussure penanda dan petanda merupakan dua unsur yang saling berkaitan dalam membentuk tanda-tanda. Penanda merupakan bagian dari bahasa yang ditulis, didengar, atau dibaca. Adapun petanda adalah konsep dari tulisan atau suara yang mampu menghasilkan sebuah makna baru. Puisi al-Tholasim merupakan puisi yang terdiri dari bait-bait yang tersusun atas penanda-penanda tertentu. Puisi ini menunjukkan adanya nilai-nilai filsafat yang menarik, bahkan ia telah mendorong para penyair lain untuk menggubah puisi baru yang menanggapi puisi tersebut. Dengan demikian, puisi al-Tholasim sesuai untuk dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis semiotika oleh Saussure yang fokus terhadap penanda dan petanda. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti mengumukakan dua pertanyaan, pertama adalah tentang hubungan antara penanda dan petanda, dan kedua adalah makna konotatif dari penanda dan petanda. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan metode kepustakaan. Dengan pembacaan heuristik dan hermeunitik peneliti memulai dengan menganalisis penanda dan petanda yang terdapat di dalamnya hingga terungkap dari penanda tersebut makna filsafat yang baru. Peneliti menemukan adanya hubungan antara penanda dan petanda yang akan menjawab pertanyaan kedua tentang makn
