Abstract :
The beginning steps in learning language is listening. It means that we listen to the sounds of the words first and we try to imitate the word as possible. Listening is understand and respond the sound of speech and processing them into words and sentences. Running dictation is one of game used in English teaching. Running dictation is the game in which students work in group. Every group consists of four or five students in which students are given the oppoturnity to interact with their group in a way to run and dictate text has been prepared. The objectives of this research are: To find out the listening ability of tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before being taught by using running dictation. To find out the listening ability of tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 after being taught by using running dictation. To find out whether there is any significance difference between the listening ability of tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using running dictation. The population of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus. In taking the sample of the research, the writer uses cluster random sampling technique. The writer gets X-7 as the sample of the research. The design of this research was experimental research. The writer uses one group pre-test post-test. The result of the experiment shows that the calculation of t-test, with the level of significance 5%, the Degree of Freedom (Df) 29, and t-table (tt) 2.045, the t-observation (to) obtained 12.60. In the words, t-observation is higher than t-table. The listening ability of tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 after being taught by using Running Dictation is “good”. It is showed by the mean is 79.33 and standard deviation 7.5. it is higher than the mean of the listening ability of tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before being taught by using Running Dictation which the mean 55.73 and standard deviation 9.87. It is categorized as “sufficient”. The suggestion for this research is for the teacher should use Running Dictation for teaching listening. Using Running Dictation can motivate the students to learn English especially in listening.
