Abstract :
Writing is one of English skill that must be mastering by the students. Writing also belongs to difficult subject because writing involves thinking, sharing, and composing words into written form organizing and structurally. Descriptive text is one of the genres that have social function to describe particular thing, person or place. One way to increase the creativity is invite the students to active in direct practice. To solve the students’ problem to share their idea on written, self-editing strategy is used to teach them in motivating their writing skill. Self-editing, in this study refers to editing the students’ own writing through recognizing their writing errors, revising, and rewriting. This research has a purpose to find out the answer from the statement of the problem. The purpose of this research is to find out the ability in writing descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. This is quantitative research. The method of the research is experimental. This design of the research is the experimental method which uses pretest and posttest. The population is all the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. The total number of population is 380 students. The sample of this research was X7 in number 35 students. The data were taken from the written test. Then, the data were analyzed using the t-test method. The result of the writing ability of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 is good (the highest is 77, the lowest is 60, the mean is 72.91, and the standard deviation is 4.149). So the conclusion is there is a significant difference between the writing ability of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Self-editing Strategy. After doing this research, I suggest that students will improve their writing skill by using self editing strategy. They can imagine as long as they want to write and also they can discuss with their friend but each students still have responsibility in their own works. By using this strategy the teacher also will know the skill of each student in the classroom.
