Abstract :
Vocabulary is sum of list or collection words arranged by alphabetical order to produce sentences. Vocabulary mastery is one of importance components of language that support the people to master the language. One of the strategies in teaching vocabulary is incidental vocabulary learning through reading. The objectives of the research is to find out wheater or not there is a significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading. The design of of this research is experimental research by using one group pre test and post test design.This experiment is applied to the eight grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus and the sample is the students of VIIIC. In this research, the writer gives the students a pre test then continue by implementation of teaching vocabulary by using incidenral vocabulary learning through reading. The result of this research can be seen from the pre test and post test result. The pre test result of the mean is 75.1 and standard deviation is 8.89. it means that the vovabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading is low. Meanwhile, on the post test result the mean is 88.7 and standard deviation is 8.5. So, the result of the vocabulary mastery after being taught by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 is good. The hypothesis is accepted in the level of significance 0.05 (5%) is 2.042 and the degree of freedom (N-1) = 31 shows that there is significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using incidental vocabulary learning through reading. The result of t0 (8.67) is higher than t-table (2.042). Therefore, it can be conclude that the Null Hypothesis is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis of the research is accepted. From the result above, the writer suggest for the teachers can use incidental vocabulary learning as one of alternative strategy to teach vocabulary. For students can master the vocabulary using incidental vocabulary learning through reading. And the last for the further researchers, they can do incidental vocabulary learning not only through reading but also through listening or video.
