Abstract :
Writing is one way to communicate. It is a skill which requires students to express their ideas in written form. I found problem owned by students of SMP Terpadu Hadziqiyyah Gemiring Lor Nalumsari Jepara in conducting English Writing. I think that Scaffolding technique as an alternative teaching technique for the students in learning process. It is one of technique that provide step by step in teaching writing descriptive text. Descriptive text is a type of genre, which has a social function to describe a particular person, thing, or place. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is any significant difference between the ability of writing descriptive text of the seventh grade students of SMP Terpadu Hadziqiyyah Gemiring Lor Nalumsari Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 taught by using and without using Scaffolding technique. To answer the research question, I hold an experimental research design that is in two different groups; experiment group and control group. I use a test as the instrument to gather the data of the ability in writing descriptive text in posttest for the students taught by using and without using scaffolding technique. From the analysis, I found that the best score that the student’s ability taught by using scaffolding technique is 85 and the lowest score is 64. While the mean of the students is 75.86 and the standard deviation is 6.76. With that the result, the students’ ability is good criteria. While, the highest score for the control group is 78 and the lowest score is 55. Meanwhile, the mean is 65.14 and the deviation standard is 5.73. The level of the ability of writing descriptive text taught without using scaffolding technique is sufficient criteria. The result of t-test is 6.02 with the t-table 2.02. So, there is a significant difference between the ability of writing descriptive text of the seventh grade students of SMP Terpadu Hadziqiyyah Gemiring Lor Nalumsari Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 taught by using and without using Scaffolding technique. Considering the process and the result of this research, I suggest that an interesting technique in teaching English to improve their ability in writing descriptive text is scaffolding technique. This is because scaffolding technique gives clear guidance in teaching writing ability. It is provide step by step in writing process.
