Key words: grammar, tense, simple present tense, snowball throwing method English is important language, so English becomes one of the materials in teaching and learning in Indonesia. One way of mastering English is by improving the mastery of grammar. Grammar is the whole system and structure of a language in general. When the writer talks about grammar, it will be connected with tense. The word ‘Tense’ is a form of verb used to express time relation. There are only two tenses in English which are marked by inflections. These are the simple present and simple past tenses. Simple present tense is one of material learning in English subject for Junior High School, especially seventh grade. It is also taught for the seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. The students are difficult in learning simple present tense. The objectives of this research are to find out the mastery of simple present tense of seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using snowball throwing method, to find out the mastery of simple present tense of seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using snowball throwing method, to find out the significant difference between the mastery of simple present tense of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using snowball throwing method. The design used in this research is quantitative experimental research. The population is the seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. The writer takes VIIA as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The research instrument used by the writer is the pre-test and the post-test with multiple choice formats. The number of the tests is 30 items. The pre-test result shows the mean is 51.67 and the standard deviation is 11.76, while the post-test data shows the mean is 86.79 and the standard deviation is 8.54. The calculation of t-test shows t0 = 23.72 > t-table = 2.02, it means there is a significant difference between the mastery of simple present tense for the seventh grade students of MTs NU Hasyim Asy’ari III Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using snowball throwing method. Based on the result above, the writer suggests that the teacher should use the various methods and media in teaching English. By using snowball throwing method, the students are more interested, more active, and easier in learning simple present tense. ABSTRAKSI Manaf, Moh Abdul. 2012.
