The purpose of reading is to get the information or knowledge from the text or paper that they had been read. Reading skill is one of the basic skill and the important skill that must learned by all of the people. In fact, many people especially tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School confused or still difficulties to understand reading material. From this fact, the teacher must be creative and have a technique to improve the reading skill. One of the technique is KWLH technique. The objectives of the research is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the reading ability of tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using KWLH technique. The design of of this research is experimental research by using test as an instrument of the research. This experiment of the research uses one group pre test and post test design, because it is done in one group only without control group. This experiment is applied to the tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School Kudus to explore the result of their reading ability before and after being taught by using KWLH technique. In this research, the writer gives the students a pre test then continue by implementation of teaching reading by using KWLH technique and the last, the writer give them post test. The sample is the students of X TEI. The result of this research indicates that using KWLH technique in teaching reading is effective to improve the reading ability of the students. It can be seen from the pre test and post test result. The pre test result of the mean is 64.5 and standard deviation is 7.45. So, the result of the reading ability before being taught by using KWLH technique of tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 is sufficient. Meanwhile, on the post test result the mean is 81.4 and standard deviation is 6.35. So, the result of the reading ability after being taught by using KWLH technique of tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 is verygood. The hypothesis is confirmed in the level of significance 0.05 (5%) is 2.021 and the degree of freedom (N-1) = 39 shows that there is significant difference between the reading ability of tenth grade students of Wisudha Karya Vocational High School Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using KWLH technique. The result of t0 (10.59) is higher than t-table (2.021). Therefore, it can be said that the Null Hypothesis is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis of the research is confirmed. The writer suggests for the teachers can use KWLH technique as one of simple teachnique to teach reading . The teacher also should motivate the students in study English. For students should master their reading ability by using KWLH technique and also they should know the meaning of English vocabulary/ the verb because it make the students can understand what the meaning of the sentences. And the last for the further researchers, they can do KWLH technique not only in teaching reading but also in teaching speaking, reading and writing. ABSTRAKSI Nurya, Ilma Khasna. 2012.
