Abstract :
This thesis presents ?Loyalty Portrayed In Eleanor Atkinson?s Greyfriars Bobby: As a Reader-Response Study?. The story tells about a little skye terrier dog, named bobby that is loyal to his master, Auld Jock. The aim of this thesis is to find out the characteristics of the main character, Bobby in Eleanor Atkinson?s Greyfriars Bobby, to find out Bobby?s loyalty toward his master, and to explain loyalty from reader?s point of view. This study applies reader-response theory and needs interpretation of the text which also applies hermeneutics theory. The writer analyzes loyalty of the main character from the text of the novel. Greyfriars Bobby is one of novels that uses setting in the nineteenth century. The characters of Bobby are intelligent, not vindictive, unique, agile, polite, sensitive, and cunning dog. Bobby shows courageous act of loyalty to his master, Auld Jock through his attitude and act toward his master. When his master has already passed away, Bobby still keeps watching over his master?s grave. Bobby leaves his master?s grave only for food. Bobby is still loyal to guard his master?s grave until his own death.
