The research attempts to analyze appraisal systems in New York article.

2010?has two research questions. They are (1) What are Appraisal
systems created in New York Times article? (2) How are the readers positioned in
New York Times article?
This research used qualitative method. An article written by Marlise
Simons was downloaded from www.nytimes.com. It was analyzed using appraisal
theory proposed by White (1998).
The researcher found three kinds of appraisal system, they are: Attitude,
which consists of affect (30.8%), judgement (23.1%) and appreciation (46.1%).
Engagement has two systems, namely: monogloss and heterogloss. In this
analysis, the researcher did not find the use of monogloss. Besides,heterogloss
divided into three sub systems, those are: projection (68.4%), modality (10.5%),
and concession (21.1%). The last sub systems is graduation which consists of
force (75%) and focus (25%).
Based on the analysis of appraisal systems,the readers are positioned as
the people who accept the author argument because the readers are influenced by
the author?s perspective about the conditionand something happenedbetween
Netherland and Indonesia that have been in tense.
