Abstract :
This study aims to reveal the reasons for gender inequality in A Pair of Silk Stockings, to find out the kind of oppression gained from Mrs. Sommers and the impacts of gender inequality on Mrs. Sommers. The object of this study is a short story written by Kate Chopin entitled A Pair of Silk Stockings. The writer used qualitative methodology to analyze this short story. In collecting the data, the writer uses some steps to read the short story, identify the problem, analyze the data, and interpret the data. The basic theory of this study is Feminism, develops by Kate Millet in her book Sexual Politics. There are three results of this study; first, three causes of gender inequality are; Mrs. Sommers struggle financially in her married life, Mrs. Sommers belongs to lower class society, and Mrs. Sommers status as a woman. Second, two forms of oppression, are; motherhood oppression in the family and the submissive position of Mrs. Sommers. The last is; two impacts of gender inequality they are; Mrs. Sommers' insecurities and Mrs. Sommers's depression.
