Abstract :
This study uses Yule's theory to examine the use of deixis in Sam Smith's song lyrics in "Love Goes" album. The word "deixis" comes from the Greek verb deiknymi, which means "to display? or?point out." It is used to show the parts of the utterance that are relevant to the situation. The study is focused on how the study explains the many types of deixis, their meanings, and why they are used in certain song lyrics. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method, whereby the writer discusses the types of deixis in which the data gathered from listening and reading song lyrics in the album of ?Love Goes? by Sam Smith. The writer then identifies and categorizes the deixis that appear in the song lyrics. The next step is for the writer to analyze the datais supported by Yule's theory. The writer discovered deixis types such as person deixis, spatialdeixis, and temporal deixis after analyzing all the data from Sam Smith's song lyrics in "Love Goes" album. There are 486 person deixis in all of the songs on the "Love Goes" album, 41 spatial deixis, and 44 temporal deixis. There are three types of person deixis: first person, second person, and third person. The first person deixis is used to identify the person who is speaking. The second person deixis is employed to show the addressee, who in this case in the songs is his lover. The third person deixis is intended to depict a referent that has not been recognized, however in this album, it refers to the people who are around the singer and his lover. Every song employs spatial deixis to indicate a location of participant in speech event to which the singer or the speaker belongs, whilst temporal deixis is utilized to point out a certain period of time that the singer or the speaker has lived through or experienced.
