Abstract :
This study attempts to describe the mood system, tenor and the singer?s attitudes and judgments built in Michael Heart?s song lyric ?We Will Not Go Down?. The object of the study is 35 lines of Michael Heart?s song lyrics which is downloaded from www.michaelheart.com/songforgaza/lyric.html, accessed on 5 October 2010. The text then retyped in Microsoft Office 2007 for ease of text fragmenting for the process of analysis. The object of the study was analyzed using descriptive qualitative research as a method of investigation, since the data are in the form of written words and they were descriptively analyzed. There are several steps: segmenting the data into the unit of analysis; identifying the unit of analysis according to mood elements, mood type and polarity; finding tenor of the discourse by using agentive role, status and social distance; finding the singer?s attitudes towards the song by analyzing modality. To strengthen the investigation process and the result gained, the writer also uses library research to find further information and some theories related to the matter discussed. The result of the study leads to the understanding of interpersonal meaning used in Michael Heart?s song lyric. The interpretation of interpersonal meaning in Michael Heart?s song ?We Will Not Go Down? concludes that the singer is telling the hearer about his condemnation toward war and hostilities.
