Abstract :
The thesis entitled the illocutionary acts realized in Guy de
Maupassant?s short story ?The Necklace?. In this thesis, the research
would like to identify the meaning of utterances within dialogue in
terms of speech act. The research is aimed to finding out the
taxonomies of acts realized in Guy de Maupassant?s short story, and
explaining the reasons for the characters to use their own selected
illocutionary acts. The types of illocutionary acts realized i n 80
utterances are: 16 representative utterances: 6 information (7.5 %), 6
statement (7.5 %), 1 conclusion (1.25%), assertion 2 (2.5%) and 1
confession (1.25%); 36 directive utterances: 5 commands (6.25%), 15
requests (18.75%), 10 questions (12.5%), 1 suggestion (1.25%), 1 beg
(1.25%), and 4 tell (5 %); 17 commissive utterances: 4 promises (5%),
4 refuse (5%), 8 accept (10%), and 1 pledge(1.25%); 10 expressive
utterances: 1 disappointed (1.25%), 1 like (1.25%), 1 dislike (1.25%),
1 displeasure (1.25%), 1 impossibility (1.25%), 1 possibility (1.25%),
1 certainty (1.25%), 1 regret (1.25%), and 1 pleasure (1.25%). 1
declarative utterance: 1 denial (1.25%). The illocutionary act most
frequently realized is requests (18.75%). It means one of the main
characters want the other for some services. Those services may be
closely related to the betterment of some moral values approved
between the main characters.
