ABSTRACT Krisnawati, Noviana. 2022. The Role of Environment Toward Homosexuality in Movie Moonlight (2016) by Barry Jenkins: As a Queer Study. A Research Paper, Department Faculty of Law and Language, Universitas Stikubank Semarang. Supervisor: Yulistiyanti, S.S., M.Hum. This research examines how the environment in the film Moonlight influenced the main character's decision to identify as gay. In order to identify the analysis, this study used Judith Butler's queer theory, and it applied the qualitative method to the data. In order to acquire data, the author used depth analysis and interpreted the film to provide a wealth of supporting information. There are three findings from this study. The first is that the environment that influences the main character to be a homosexual are his peer's school and family. The second, performativity as a homosexual are seen as in recognition, utterances, appearance, and sexual activities. Finally, the problems the main character has as a homosexual in heterosexual society are hiding, social punishment, and disclosing.
