Abstract :
This study aimed to analyze the students' speaking ability in doing oral
presentations based on the speaking classification by Harris (1974), to find
out the factors affecting students' speaking ability, and the problems of
students' speaking ability in doing oral presentations in classroom. The
subjects of this study were the fourth semester students of English Education
Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang in the academic year
2022/2023 in A class, and D class. This study used a qualitative case study.
Observation, questionnaire, and interview were used to collect the data. The
findings of this study showed that the speaking ability of the students in doing
oral presentations was mostly at good levels with the average score between
70-79 in their speaking performance. The findings also showed that there were
some factors that affected their speaking ability during their oral
presentations. First in the linguistics factors, the major factors were lack of
vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and grammatical errors. Second in the
psychology factors, the major factors were lack of confidence, motivation, and
feeling of anxiety. Then for the external factors, there were the preparation
and practice, the use of visual aids, and the influence of the mother tongue.
Furthermore, this study also found that there were some students? speaking
problems during their oral presentations. They have some speaking problems
including problems in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. In
conclusion, even though the fourth semester students were mostly categorized
as having good speaking abilities in doing oral presentations, they still have
some speaking problems caused by some factors in doing oral presentations
in classroom.
