This final project is about the use of an audio-visual recipe as a medium to
teach speaking skill of procedure text to the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Bawang,
Banjarnegara, in the academic year of 2009/2010. The objective of this study is to
find out whether teaching speaking skill of procedure texts by using an audio-visual
recipe as the medium is effective to improve students? speaking skill.
The object of this study was the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Bawang,
Banjarnegara, in the academic year of 2009/2010. I conducted the research in class
X-3. In order to achieve the objective of my study, I designed an action research that
was carried out through a pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. I used speaking test,
observation checklist, and interview as my instruments in collecting the data. There
were five meetings in this research. One meeting was used for conducting pre-test,
and four meetings were used to conduct cycle 1 and cycle 2.
The results of this study showed that the students? speaking skill improved in
each test. I found there was a significant difference of the result of the students? mean
score in pre-test, formative test, and post test. The students? mean score in pre-test
was 62.00; formative test was 67.22; and post-test was 76.11.
Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that audio-visual
recipe is an effective medium to improve students? speaking skill of procedure texts.
In this study, I suggest the English teacher to use an audio-visual recipe as one of the
media in teaching speaking, especially in procedure text.
