Abstract :
Celery leaves and betel leaves contain chemical compounds flavonoids,
saponins and tannins that can inhibit the growth of bacteria Escherichia coli. This
study aims to determine the inhibitory combination of ethanol extract of celery
leaves and betel leaves against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 with a diffusion
method.
The extraction method used is macerated with 70% ethanol. The
combination of celery leaf extract concentration and betel leaves are used is 25%:
75%; 50%: 50% and 75%: 25%. Positive control used is the antibiotic cefotaxime
30 µg. Measuring the diameter of inhibition zone of Escherichia coli using the
diffusion method of Kirby and Bauer and analyzed statistical methods One Way
ANOVA.
The results of this study demonstrate that the combination of extracts of
celery leaves and betel leaf can inhibit the growth of bacteria Escherichia coli
ATCC 25922. The results of the positive control inhibition zone, a combination of
25%: 75%; 50%: 50%; 75%: 25% and negative controls resulted in inhibition
zone diameter 39.16 mm; 27.03 mm; 22.66 mm; 21,60 mm and 6.0 mm. The
combination of extracts of celery leaves and betel leaves 25%: 75% do not have a
potential comparable to the antibiotic cefotaxime 30 g with a significance value of
0.000, which means that there are significant differences in the distribution of the
results of inhibition in positive control or comparison combination of extracts.
The combination of extracts of celery leaves and betel leaf that produces the
highest inhibition zone diameter on a combination of 25%: 75%.
