Abstract :
Escherichia coli is a rod, gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen, and causes
infection in several parts of the body, and is a major cause of diarrhea. Infections
caused by Escherichia coli can be treated with antibiotics, the high use of
antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. One of the natural ingredients that can
be used for alternative medicine is the red galangal rhizome (Alpinia purpurata K.
Schum). This scientific paper aims to describe the effectiveness of Alpinia
purpurata K. Schum extract as an antibacterial against Escherichia coli based on
literature studies.
This study uses secondary data collection taken from several scientific
journals. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis method.
The results of research from 4 journals showed that Alpinia purpurata K.
Schum extracted with different methods and solvents was able to inhibit
Escherichia coli, the higher the extract concentration, the wider the inhibition
zone formed.
In this scientific paper, it can be concluded that the red galangal extract of
Alpinia purpurata K. Schum is able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, the
higher the concentration given the greater the radical zone formed.
