Abstract :
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. This condition is compounded by the oxidative stress situation of the red blood cell membrane due to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and advance glycosylation end products which causes the number of red blood cells to decrease due to rapid hemolysis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between the number of red blood cells and blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The data used comes from encyclopedias, text books, handbooks, research reports, theses, dissertations, or scientific journals. This literature study research used descriptive statistical methods by analyzed and described the data that has been collected by the similarities and differences in the literature used. The results of the research in 3 different journals gave insignificant results in both journals, where the p value was significant if <0.05, so it showed that there was no significant relationship between the number of red blood cells and blood glucose levels. While the significance in the third journal with p <0.0001, so that there is a significant relationship between the number of red blood cells and blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The conclusion from the results of this study, there is a relationship between the number of red blood cells and blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
