Abstract :
S. dysentriae is one of the bacteria that causes diarrhea. Alternative
treatment for diarrhea is natural ingredients, one of which uses bitter melon
(Momordica charantia L.) because it contains antibacterial active compounds
such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and steroids. The purpose of this
study was to determine the ability of extract bitter melon plants to inhibit the
growth of S. dysenteriae and to find out the picture (radical zone) of various
variations in the concentration of bitter melon extract in inhibiting the growth of
S. dysenteriae.
This research uses the type of literature study research. The data needed
in this study were obtained from the results of research on the activity of bitter
melon extract in inhibiting the growth of S.dysentriae. The samples used were
extract, leaves, fruit, and bitter melon stems. The data obtained were then
analyzed using descriptive analysis.
The results showed variations in the concentration of bitter melon
extract were able to inhibit the growth of S.dysentriae and there were no
concentrations of bitter melon extract that equaled positive control. The biggest
diameter of inhibition zone and approaching the diameter of inhibition zone
formed by positive control is a concentration of 50% with an average of 13.33
mm, and the smallest concentration is 10 mg / ml with an average of 5 mm.
The higher concentration of extract of bitter melon plants, the greater
the diameter inhibitory zone produced. From each concentration used, radical
zones were formed at all concentrations of bitter melon extract.
