Abstract :
Diabetes melitus is an incurable disease and requires lifelong management in
controlling blood sugar levels in order to improve the quality of life of patients. At
present there are increasing consumption of herbal medicines to support the
treatment of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, the American Diabetes Association
(ADA) raises the issue of "Unproven Therapies" which encourages clinical
observation steps to evaluate the effectiveness and awareness of the risks of herbal
medicines that may happen. This study aims to describe the use of herbal
medicines by patients with type 2 diabetes melitus at Kimia Farma Pharmacy
Sragen. This research is descriptive study using methods questionnaires and data
analysis presented in tabular form. Sampling is taken with purposive sampling
obtained 53 respondents. The results showed that there are two kinds of herbal
antidiabetic used by patients with diabetes melitus, raw material and finished
formulation. There are eleven types of medicinal plants used as herbal
antidiabetic. The most widely used medicinal plants are bay leaves (Syzigium
polyanthum L.) as much as 16.98%, then pare (Momordica charantia L.) 15.09%
and curcuma (Curcuma xanthorrizha L.) 13.21%.
