Abstract :
Green betel (Piper betle L.) contains active compound flavonoid that
had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus which is one of the
bacteria that cause acne. Flavonoid had low lipid solubility and poorly absorbed
by the skin. Nanoparticles used to increase the penetration of active substances
through the stratum corneum. Gel can easily penetrate to the skin that gives
healing effect. The aim of this research to made a formulation gel nanoparticles of
ethanol extract of betel leaf with an optimal variation of carbopol and HPMC with
the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. Betel leaf extraction used maceration
method with 70% ethanol solvent. Nanoparticles were made by ionic gelation
method with alginate 0,1% and CaCl2 0,02% polymers. Optimal formula is
obtained by the SLD method using Design Expert 10 software with parameters
pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, antibacterial activity. Verification optimal
formula using the One sample t-test, the stability with cycling test method, and
acceptability test. The result of optimal formula showed carbopol concentration of
80.9% and HPMC 19.1%. Based the verification, the predictions with the test
results were insignificantly different indicated by p values > 0.05 showed method
is valid to describe the response as expected. The optimal formula gel has good
physical stability and can be accepted by people.
