Abstract :
Clove leaf (Syzigium aromaticum L.) is one of the plants that has potential
as an antibacterial, where clove leaves contain several compounds, namely:
flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins and phenols, which have antibacterial
effectiveness. Gel can reduce the risk of dry skin due to washing your hands too
often. This study aims to formulate hand antiseptic gel preparations from clove
leaf ethanol extract (Syzigium aromaticum L.), and to test the antibacterial activity
of the preparation againstbacteria Staphylococcus aureus, using CMC-Na base
formulated in clove leaf ethanol extract antiseptic gel preparations. The extraction
method used in this study is using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as
solvent. Preparation of hand antiseptic gel preparation of clove leaf extract was
carried out with three concentrations of clove leaf ethanol extract, namely: 5%,
10% and 15% concentration. Tests for quality control of gel preparations were:
homogeneity, pH, spreadability, viscosity, and adhesion. The results of the
physical properties test at concentrations of 5%, 10, and 15% had good physical
qualities, respectively, with a pH value of 5; spreadability 6.55cm ±0.1; 5.50cm
±0.05; 5.12 cm ± 0.09; viscosity 300 dPa.s; 330 dPa.s.; 340 dPa.s, and adhesion
1.78sec±0.01; 1.79sec±0.01; 1.78sec ±0.03. The antibacterial activity test found
that the hand antiseptic gel preparation of clove leaf ethanol extract had the ability
to inhibitbacteria Staphylococcus aureus in the medium category with an
inhibition zone of 8.88; 9.37 and 9.98 mm, with p-value <0.05, which means there
is a significant difference in the concentration value..
