Abstract :
ABSTRACT This study analyzes the determinants of fish farmers’ decisions related to urban sprawl and land use in the Bojongsoang sub district, Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. Eighty-five respondents are purposely chosen for the study from six villages, and a probit model is applied to identify the most important factor influencing fish farmers’ decisions to retain aquaculture and the agreement level of ex-fish farmers concerning land-use changes. Results show that age, off-pond farm, and location (Buahbatu and Bojongsoang village) are statistically significant factors that affect fish farmers’ decisions. Age is likely to increase the probability to retain aquaculture, whereas having an off-pond farm and location are likely to decrease the probability. Moreover, age and job satisfaction negatively impact the agreement level of ex-fish farmers concerning land-use changes. The study also compares income earning between fish farm and off-fish farm and finds that the difference is not statistically different. Finally, policies that aim to secure a resource base (farmland and water) and to select only a specific village that is available and safe for engaging in farming should be taken into consideration in response to location pressure. It is also recommended to accommodate adequate incentives to retain farmland in villages that sustain aquaculture. In addition, young fish farmers should be taken into account in promoting farming by giving them important role in making decisions within farming communities.
