Abstract :
This research examine figurative language especially personification and hyperbole in
the Sharon Hendricks?s poems. The purpose of the study is to analyze personification
and hyperbole in the poems, the study use theories of personification and hyperbole
based on Perrine (1988), Paxson (1994), Wren and Martin (1981), KnickerBocker
(1963). The writer applies descriptive method based on Lexy J (2002). The result of
the research is that the poems uses figurative language of personification and
hyperbole. Personification is divided into two kinds: animal personification and
object personification. Animal personification found in the poems; Games, Nature?s
Chorus, and My Dog. Object personification consist of two part. The first one is dead
object personification found in the poems; Dinnertime Chorus, My Town, The
Gastronomic Gym, and My Dinner Loves Dancing. The second is Plants
personification found in the poems; My Town, Nature?s Chorus,The Gastronomic
Gymand My dinner loves dancing. Sharon Hendrick?s poems uses hyperbole such as;
My Dog, Appetite, Who am I, Thanksgiving,and Summertime is here. There is one
poem which is using both personification and hyperbole in poem My Dog. Beside,
Sharon Hendricks is using personification to make the poems more attractive like
human being and uses hyperbole to make the poems intention strong and have more
meaningful intention.
