Abstract :
Cocoa seeds need to be maintained viability during storage and delivery to planting. This is because cocoa seeds are a type of recalcitrant seed that has no dormancy period and high moisture content. This study aims to determine the influence of various storage media and soaking time of young coconut water to viability of cocoa seed (Theobroma cacao L.). The research was conducted at Seed Technology Laboratory of Agriculture Faculty of Universitas Sumatera Utara Medan with height + 25 meter above sea level, from November to December 2017, using completely randomized design with 2 factors of treatment. The first factor is various storage media with 4 types namely, control, rice husk ash, sawdust, and zeolite. The second factor is long soaking with young coconut water 100% concentration with 4 levels ie, 0, 4, 8 and 12 hours. The observed parameters were seed moisture content, percentage of seeds germinated in storage, percentage of moldy seeds in storage, rate of germination, percentage of seeds germinated in seeding, length of hypocotyl, length of epicotyl, number of leaves. The results showed that the treatment of various storage media had significant effect on seed moisture content after storage (before soaking), seed moisture content after soaking, with the highest result obtained on the treatment of zeolite store media and number of leaves on the treatment of sawdust media. Treatment of soaking time with young coconut water had significant effect on seed moisture content parameters after soaking, the percentage of seeds germinated in seeding, hypocotyl length, and epicotyl length with the highest yield obtained at 12 hours long soaking. The interaction between various storage media and soaking time of young coconut water significantly influenced moisture content after soaking with the highest result was obtained from the combination of zeolite storage media and the soaking of young coconut water for 12 hours.
