Abstract :
Palm fronds is one of solid waste was produced by palm plantations each of harvest. Chemical analysis of palm fronds reveals that component cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin that show palm fronds had a chance to processed further be useful product and economically valuable. Palm fronds containing ??cellulose amount 34,89%, hemicellulose 27,14% and lignin 19,87%. Based on that content, palm fronds has the potential to be used as raw materials for making oxalic acid. The purpose of this research is to know an assess the influence of the concentration of nitric acid and oxidation reaction time of the cellulose?s conversion, and the quality of oxalic acid produced. The research held two stages, preparation of the palm fronds stage and synthesis stage of oxalic acid which includes that process of oxidizing and crystallization. Analysis of the raw materials include the analysis of water content and cellulose content of palm fronds. The water content is 46,6% and cellulose content is 29,2%. A quantitative analysis include the conversion of cellulose. The largest cellulose convertion held at concentration of nitric acid 70% and reaction time 80 minutes is 58,56%. For the qualitative analysis includes an analysis of the purity and melting point. An analysis of melting point is 101.8 °C which indicates that the oxalic acid is obtained in the form of oxalic acid dihydrate.
