Abstract :
The objectives of this study are to describe (1) the translation process, (2) the complicated factors found, and (3) the suitable translation techniques chosen in translating the Acehnese?s fable and parable texts into English. The data of this study are six stories of fables and parables, namely ?Lhèe Sikawan?, ?Haba Peulandôk ngon Sipôt?, ?Peulandôk?, ?Abu Nawah?, ?Putroe Cut Geunta Lila?, and ?Raja Teumbôn?. The data were taken from Geunta book, a reading book for primary schools, volume 4 to 6, published in 1969. This descriptive-qualitative research is used to give an overview of the translation process and problems found caused by linguistic or cultural differences using the appropriate translation techniques in translating from SL to TL. This study focuses on translation process not its product. In general, the writer does not find difficulties in translating the Acehnese?s fable and parable texts into English except some cultural expressions that must be translated using oblique translation techniques due to the gaps of language and cultural systems of the both languages. In the translation process, the writer conducted two stages, first, translating the fables and parables of the six texts literally, word per word and then classifying certain words which have linguistic functions in the sentence so that the message in SL will not lose. Second, after the texts were translated, the writer described the generic structure and language features of texts in order to reach the standards of the generic structure and linguistic features of a narrative genre text. In general, the writer did not find difficulties in the translation process. But however, due to the differences of linguistic structure and cultural aspects of the two languages, the oblique translation techniques were used dominantly, 305 data (64,4%) than literal translation techniques, 169 data (35.6%). Based on the frequent use of each of the oblique translation techniques, the first rank was modulation 98 data (32.1%), then, transposition 53 data (17.4%), addition 52 data (17%), deletion 38 data (12.5%), reduction 35 data (11.5%), amplification 10 data (3.3%), adaptation 7 data (2.3%), particularization 5 data (1.7%), description 3 data (1%), established equivalence and generalization 2 data (0.6%) respectively.
