This study aims to describe the factors that causal language anxiety in
performance speaking in English classes as one of the causal factors to gain a
broader understanding of this phenomenon.
This study included descriptive qualitative research. This involves
EFL Speaking Class students in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro 2018-2019 academic
year as participants. The instruments are researchers themselves (interviewers),
observation sheets, reflection sheets, and voice recorders. Data is collected
through observation and interviews. Data in the form of field notes and
interview transcripts. data categorization has been made before formulating the
findings.
The findings of this study illustrate six factors that cause language
anxiety. The first factor is the kinds of assignment that demands speech in front
of class. Students are afraid if their weaknesses are revealed in front of class
participants. The second is the fear of making mistakes during student speaking
performance that usually occurs in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
The third is self-perception or self-esteem. This is about students' thinking and
estimation of their own abilities in mastering speaking skills. The fourth is the
role of lecturer related to the ability of lecturer to maintain a teaching and
learning process that is suitable for students. Next is the tension of competence
that refers to student competence in speaking compared to others. The last is
the lack of experience to English.
This is related to the lack of training and the experience of students in
speaking that affects their confidence and ability to speak. It can be concluded
that the causal factors speaking anxiety faced by students are very useful and
helpful indicated that EFL speaking class or methods are also important
component in making students feel anxious or not.
