Abstract :
Router and switch are a device that used in computer network. Router is a connecting device that using different network to operate while switch is a connecting device in the same network or local network. From the function perspective of both devices, router enroute the information packet (routing) based on internet protocol (IP) that lies within routing table while switch enroute the information based on mac address that lies within ARP table. Routing process is done within the third layer of Open System Interconncetion (OSI) which is network while switch’s process is done within the second layer of OSI which is datalink. Besides router, there is one more device that able to do routing process, multilayer switch. Multilayer switch is a networking device with the function of second layer switch however, this device can be configured so it will be able to do routing function. Both of the devices will be tested based on their performance through quality of service parameters (throughput, and packet loss) from streaming media service and by using Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP). This research is done by using three personal computers, also using emulation and simulation software GNS3 for backbone network and wireshark for network analysis tools. The throughput score of router indicates that router’s average score is 1723,95 kbps or 70,96 % higher than multilayer switch in streaming media service. While the packet loss score of router shows 68,38 % higher than multilayer switch. This research proved that multilayer switch’s performance was not good enough than router yet. Keywords : routing, router, multilayer switch, quality of service
