Abstract :
Fiber optic is one of the favorite communication medium, because it has a wide bandwidth and high speed of infor-mation delivery. But fiber optic communications still have weakness, the loss factor of information caused by losses that occur along fiber optic cable, either because of dispersion. Dispersion is each spectral component of any particular mode takes a different amount of time travel a certain distance. The different time is Group delay. Group delay is each mode thus carries an equal amount energy through the fiber. Furthermore the fiber optic have a material loss, because atomic defects are imperfections of the atomic structure of the fiber material. In this study the authors make the models of single mode step index optical fiber using software OptiFiber 2.2 output parameters to be analyzed are dispersion, group delay, and material loss. Porpose of this research is get an ideal model from single mode step index fiber (having dispersion, group delay, and material loss less value) based on ITU-T G.652. The obtained results from this research is an optical fiber core very important role in the transmission process, because dispersion, group delay, and material loss occurs in the core, although the cladding size is change will not effecting for three research parameters. Based on the research from several optical fiber models core size 4/125 μm has less dispersion, group delay, and material loss. Core size 4/125 μm has chromatic dispersion value of 0.08405 (ps/km.nm), group delay of 4.89 ps/km, and material loss of 0.34 dB/km. The materials is very important to design an optic fiber model, if the concentrate has pure material composition the loss result is less. The material composition of SiO2, GeO2, dan B2O3 has a less of losses just than SiO2, GeO2, dan F.
