Abstract :
The aims of the study were to identify the types and categories of teacher?s written feedback that given by teacher on students? essay writing at MAN 2 Palembang and to figure out the students? perception about the teacher?s written feedback on their essay. The participants of this study were twelve students of the eleventh grade at MAN 2 Palembang. This study was a used qualitative method. The data were collected by documentation and interview. Then, the data gained from documentation and interviews were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The result showed that there were two types and two categories that made by teacher on students? essay, those were direct, indirect feedback content level and surface level. It was also found that most of the students argued that: (1) the feedback that given by teacher was clear and understandable when the feedback not only show their mistake but only tell the way how to solve it (2) the feedback that given by teacher was not clear and not understandable when the feedback made the students feel confused to understand the hint that given by teacher.
