Abstract :
ABSTRACT Oktavia Intan Permatasari. The Effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning Method in Improving English Vocabulary Mastery in Grade 7 Students at Mts Al-Qalam in Academic Year 2022/2023. Thesis, English Education Study Program: STKIP PGRI Pacitan, 2023. This study aims to know the effectiveness of CTL method to improve students' vocabulary master and to know the students' responses toward the application of the CTL method. This research is Class Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in 2 cycles. This research was conducted at MTs Al-Qalam. This research subjects were students of grade VII MTs Al-Qalam for the academic year 2022/2023 which consist of 25 students. The researcher obtained the data from students? test, interview and observation. The results of the test are analyzed using the quantitative method, while the result of the observation and interview are analyzed using the qualitative method. The indicator of success is the average score of students has reached the standards of completeness (75). Then, the positive responses are also used as indicators of the success of this research. The results of data analysis showed that there was an increasing in students' vocabulary mastery of every cycle. This is shown from the average score of students? pre-test which was 66.4. There were only 8 students who reached the standards of completeness or only 32% and 17 students who did not reach or 68%. After doing cycle I using the CTL method, there was an increasing from students? average, namely 75.4. There were 19 students reached the standards of completeness or 76% and 6 or 24% students did not reach. In cycle II the students? score average were 77,2. There were 21 students reached the standards of completeness or 84% and 4 or 16% did not reach. In other words, students' vocabulary mastery has been improved. Based on the interview, observations, and documentations it showed that students' responses to the application of CTL method in learning vocabulary was very good. Students were very enthusiastic and active when participating the learning process with the CTL method. they also argue that CTL method also increased their self-confidence. Besides that, students also thought that the CTL method was the right method for learning English vocabulary because the learning process was not monotonous.
