Abstract
Jokes are part or elements of a series of Jheren Kencak art performance that developed in
the Tapal Kuda area, especially in Probolinggo regency. The Structure of this joke performance has
a functionin the art of Jheren Kencak itself and society. The presence of jokes as a performance
structure is a strategy to enliven a series Jheren Kencak arts events. The joke itself is a comedy drama
that raises issues or problem in people?s daily lives, making it increasingly popular with the audience.
The play, which is satirical in nature and full of moral messages regarding social ethics, is presented
in a performance in the form of a drama performance played by several comedians.
This research seeks to uncover the existence of a jokes as one of the structure of the Jheren
Kencak perfoming art which still exists in society today. The author used descriptive qualitative
research to search for the existence of jokes in the Jheren Kencak art in the Pandhalungan
Community in Probolinggo Regency. This comedyin the form of traditional theatre is a very close to
the community regarding the function of its presence and as a form of reflection of daily social life.
So an examination of the general function and implied function in the existence of this joke is
important to find in formulating its existence in Pandhalungan performance and society.
The existence of jokes itself is studied through dismantling visible and invisible function
using Robert K Merton?s structural functionalism theoretical approach. Then it is said to excist
because jokes still have the function of their presence in the art of Jheren Ken cak and society, whose
content is that joke contain elements of Soren Kieregaard?s existence, namely aesthetic, ethical and
religious stage so that they are eccepted in society.
