Abstract :
This research aims to discuss the social activities and marriage life in North Carolina society described in Serena Novel by Ron Rash. Social life is the relationship of human interaction with one another in an environment or society in general. Social life discusses people's lives, history, behavior, functional organization, social activities, etc. Marriage life is one's mobility and changes one's social status with one's marriage to form a new family. Marriage life in literary works is also a reflection of social phenomena that occur in society. The researcher applies qualitative descriptive as a method, and the theory of Diana Laurenson and Alan Swingewood sociology of literature. The data in this study are narration and dialogue in phrases, words, sentences, and paragraphs about social activities and marriage life from Serena's novel by Ron Rash published by Canongate Books in 2009. The results show that human activities in North Carolina society are challenging due to the geographical conditions in which they live, which are quite difficult to open agricultural land. The place is where people live in a place. In Serena's novel researchers found that the appearance and living conditions of the people of North Carolina are described according to the condition of the area where they live and access to electricity is also still difficult. The researcher also found that marriage can change one's life as well as one's position in the group. Responsibilities in marriage in a household, responsibility is not only borne by the husband or wife who does it, but both have the same responsibility. Conflict in marriage can be seen that a problem that arises in married life has many factors affecting it.
