Abstract :
The study is titled "Parenting Style and Its Impact It's Depicted in Everything I Never Told You Novel by Celeste Ng." This research aimed to determine the parenting style used with the main character's parents, in Celeste Ng's novel Everything I Never Told You, as well as the effects of parental expectations on her indicating whether or not Lydia experiences it in Everything I Never Told You. A descriptive qualitative method was also employed in this study to characterize and interpret the data. The primary data source, the novel Everything I Never Told You, is where the writer gathered the dialogues, words, and sentences. Additional supporting data from journals and articles are also used to bolster the data. Psychology literature was used as the methodology in this study. Utilizing a theory from Diana Baumrind (1991) and bolstered by Maccoby and Martin (1983) the writer drawn the conclusion of type of parenting style and its impact on children, as well as addition of a fourth parenting style. Parenting is the process by which parents gain knowledge and skills for their children (Santrock, 2003). This study employs a psychological methodology by examining and comprehending the psychology of the author, the psychology of the novel's characters, and the psychology of the readers (Wellek and Werren (1956). Analyzing a literary work using a psychological approach aims to keep using the context of literary analysis, but is a depiction of the diversity of concepts from psychology that are contained in literature by inserting through characters and conflicts in novels. The theory aids the writer in determining the kind and impact of parenting style that characters are exposed to. Her parents' high expectations and unfulfilled ambitions from their past are the root cause. The findings of this study demonstrate that Lydia, the protagonist of the novel Everything I Never Told You, had an authoritarian and permissive parenting style because her parents exhibited the symptoms.
