Abstract :
The cooperative principle introduced by Paul Grice explains how a speaker should provide accurate, precise, consistent, and relevant information to others. Flouting maxim occurs when a speaker fails to fulfill the cooperative principle to convey hidden meanings in their speech. In digital applications, such as Duolingo, flouting maxims can also be found in dialogues. This study aims to analyze the types of flouting maxims and the reasons behind those flouting maxims in the stories on the Duolingo application, particularly in chapter one, units 3-8. This studt uses a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data through documentation and observation. The data consists of dialogues between characters in the stories identified as containing flouting maxims. A total of 22 instances of flouting maxims were found, performed by 23 characters from 20 stories in the Duolingo application. Characters in units 3-8 committed 8 instances of flouting the maxim of quantity, 3 instances of flouting the maxim of quality, 10 instances of flouting the maxim of relation, and 1 instance of flouting the maxim of manner. The results show that characters in the stories on the Duolingo application frequently flout the maxims set by Grice. The reasons of flouting maxims vary, such as the desire to share information, intimacy, hesitation, lying, changing the topic of conversation, diversion, or even joking. From these findings, it can be concluded that a better understanding of flouting maxims can help individuals understand how communication functions and how they can communicate more effectively in daily life.
