Abstract :
The issue of masculinity is very interesting to study because it is related to cultural aspects. Manifestations of masculinity always adapt depending on the context of different places and individuals. The issue of masculinity can also be found in literary works, where fictional characters portray it in stories. One form of literature that is closely related to this topic is film, which often features male characters as protagonists to illustrate the definition of masculinity in related discourses. One of the films that uses men as the main characters is the film Top Gun: Maverick. This research aims to identify the characterization of the main character, Maverick, and find the types of masculinity through Maverick?s characterization in the film. In analyzing these objectives, this research uses Janet Saltzman Chafetz?s masculinity theory and DiYanni?s characterization theory. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method that presents explanations in the form of descriptions in the text. The result of this study found that there are eight characterizations of Maverick that reflect masculinity, including brave, experienced, stoic, intelligent, leadership, responsible, decisive and confident. Based on Janet Saltzman Chafetz?s concept, this study also found six types of masculinity through Maverick?s characterization, including the physical, sexual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, and other personal. In conclusion, this research proves that the character of Maverick in the movie Top Gun: Maverick reflects masculinity based on Janet Saltzman Chafetz?s concept.
