Abstract :
This study aims to examine the characterization and archetypes of the character Merit in the novel Without Merit. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data was gathered through the analysis of the characters? narration and dialogue in the novel. This research incorporates Laurence Perrine?s concept of characterization and Carl Gustav Jung?s archetype theory. Merit?s characterization analysis corroborates the archetype findings, yielding 34 data points that encompass several facets of Merit?s personality. The data is divided into two characterization methods: direct method, which includes 6 data and (2) the indirect method, which consist 28 data. Some of the prominent characterizations of Merit honest, insecure, individualistic, impulsive, manipulative, thinker, critical, desperate, and authentic. This study also identified 34 relevant Merit archetypes, with shadow dominating 12 out of archetype data. Furthermore, there are five pieces of personal data that indicate that Merit possesses a propensity for uncontrolled anger, spontaneity, and a preference for influence her cognitive processes and behavior. Additionally, she exhibits characteristics of a woman who displays laziness in self-care. The nine self-data in Merit demonstrate that the process of individuation, confronting the traumas and disappointments she encountered. Initially, she resisted these experiences, but gradually she embraced and pardoned everyone in her life, leading to her own growth and contentment.
