Abstract :
Edward W. Said?s Orientalism approach focuses on how the West views the East in terms of stereotype construction. This research aimed to find out how intrinsic extrinsic elements in the Crazy Rich Asians novel, examine how the West perpetuates stereotypes about the Eastern world, and find out the portrayal of the main character, Nicholas Young, towards Edward W. Said?s Orientalism approach in Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan (2013). This study used a descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data. The results demonstrated a clear depiction of Orientalism in Nicholas Young?s character. According to the findings presented in this study, Eastern individuals are portrayed in a stereotypical and inferior manner, whereas Western individuals are seen as superior. This study gathered 38 (thirty-eight) data for the first problem formulation, which pertains to the narrative structure of the Crazy Rich Asians novel, using Stanton?s (2012) theory. These data include 22 Intrinsic Elements and 16 Extrinsic Elements. Furthermore, the data related to the second problem formulation centers on Nicholas Young, a main character in the Crazy Rich Asians novel, who portrays Western stereotypes using Said?s theory, which consists of: 3 instances of Dependent, 5 instances of Inferior, 3 instances of Subordinate Education, and 3 instances of Traditional. Whereas the description portrayal of Orientalism using Said?s theory (2003) consists of 15 Cultural data, 5 Economic data, and 4 Religious data. This research concludes that the Crazy Rich Asians novel has intrinsic and extrinsic elements that pertain to concerns about Orientalism and Western Stereotypes. These elements are evident in the portrayal of the main character, Nicholas Young.
