Abstract :
Pragmatics is the study of meaning related to context within conversational situations. This study uses film as a medium to explore various meanings due to its powerful capability to deliver message. The study aims to analyze types of directive and translation techniques in the 2022 film Turning Red. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, it examines the utterances consisting of words, phrases, and sentences spoken by Meilin Lee in the film. The research utilizes Allan?s (1986) theory to categorize directive speech act and Molina and Albir?s (2002) theory to identify the translation technique and their correlation with pragmatic meaning reflected in Turning Red. There are twenty-six data points identified. The findings reveal all types of directives, including Advice (4), Requirements (9), prohibitions (6), questions (1), and Request (6). The findings suggest that Turning Red film was intended to offer encouragement, inspiration, motivation, and persuasion to graduates. Additionally, the study also identifies six translation techniques in the data: Adaptation (8), amplification (4), established equivalent (2), literal translation (6), modulation (5), and transposition (2). The identified directives convey potent message that resonate and motivate the graduates.
